Illustration is the art of telling stories with pictures. Those who don't enjoy telling or listening to stories will also have little appreciation for illustration. Conversely, those who appreciate stories will love illustration. Stories belong to us: we humans are the animals who sit around the fire in the evenings, sharing stories while all the rabbits, foxes, bears, and ravens at best bid each other good night. That's what defines us and has made us what we are, for better or for worse.And just as language shapes images, images belong to language. So, whether it's a depiction or a vision: drawing and illustration create a mirror in which both what already exists and what only exists in our imagination are reflected. Seen in this way, it is a medium that tells us a tremendous amount about ourselves.
