ABOUT THE STUDIO

WELCOME TO URBAN CARTOONERY

Behind the maps is illustrator and art director Natascha Schwarz. She takes a real city and draws it as one big isometric story, building by building, character by character. The lady walking her dog along the promenade. The fishermen on the pier. The neighbours you only notice on the third look.

Natascha was born in St. Petersburg and studied at the Stieglitz Academy of Industrial Art. Most of her life, though, she has lived in Germany, where she took her degree in Communication Design at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences. You can see both schools in her work. She still fills sketchbooks, draws just as surely on screen, and has spent more than 20 years on art direction and visual concepts for clients like Porsche, Deutsche Telekom, Handelsblatt and Staatsballett Berlin.

About Urban Cartoonery: hand-drawn city maps by Natascha Schwarz

  • SKETCHED IN PENCIL

It starts on paper. Pencil sketches of the streets, the landmarks and the small scenes that make a city itself.

  • DRAWN BY HAND ON THE IPAD

Then the real work: each line drawn on the iPad. Hundreds of characters, each with a story of its own. One city takes weeks.

  • FROM OUR STUDIO TO YOUR WALL

Each portrait is printed to order in museum quality and sent to you, wherever you are.

IN THE STUDIO

WATCH A CITY TAKE SHAPE

Before the first line goes onto the iPad, there are pages of pencil and ink: quick studies of streets, faces and passers-by.

From there, roofs, palm trees and faces are drawn one at a time. That is why no two characters are alike, and why you will keep discovering new little stories in the same map long after it goes up on your wall.
